FOR THE LOVE OF ROTARIESAt age 25, the owner of this smooth and custom built Series 3 Mazda RX7 should be one happy person. Not only has he built a car that with such an excellent overall package, but he has also built a car worthy to show, cruise, drag and use on a daily basis. Owning a series 2 RX7 prior, Chris also points out that his next car will most likely be another Series 3, but with the bigger 20B motor in place of the normally found 13B. In the meantime however, he plans to improve this current ride with more power, a full roll cage and also the obligatory tubbing of the rear wheels to enable himself to get some power the tarmac.
Starting With a Series 5 13B block, Chris added a mild port, 3mm seals and series 4 rotars. Hanging off the side is a T04/66 turbo with a 115 rear housing. The gases leave via a custom manifold and dump pipe and out a 3inch stainless exhaust. A Hybrid front mount intercooler keeps the air cooled while a Microtech LTX-8 computer monitors everything that goes on. Other goodies in the engine bay include a Tial 44mm wastegate, Bosh 044 fuel pump, carter Gold lift pump, surge tank, Sard fuel pressure regulator and 4 x870cc Siemens fuel injectors to get all of the much needed fuel to stop detonation.
A custom oil cooler and radiator place alongside the Bosch coils and Tial Q blow off valve. A series 5 RX7 gearbox plays alongside brass button clutch with a one-tonne pressure plate and lightened flywheel and a custom 3 inch tailshaft and full spool differential. Naturally the braking system had to be upgraded at this point and that was done using series 5 RX7 hardware at the front end. All of this work was performed by the team at Race Solutions in Sydney’s west and allow the motor to produce 274kw at the rear wheels which equates to about 367 horsepower in the old language.
Metallic silver paint flows smoothly over the panels, and covers the delicate work done when the door locks were shaved and all of the excess holes in the engine bay were welded and smoothed over. To add a bit of “bling” to the car, chromed window surrounds and chrome door handles were put into place. It is the small things like this that make a good car and excellent car. All of the bodywork was prepared and completed by 2SUS Custom resprays.
The guys at Custom Trim Works were then put in charge of adding the multitude of Autometer Pro Comp series gauges so that Chris can monitor his car to a higher level. While they were at it, they added Recaro seats in the front and trimmed the entire interior in blood red leather and snake skin highlights. The dash was customised to fit the gauges more naturally and red suede was used to bring the roof to a higher standard.
The whole package is then set off with 17 x 7 inch gold Simmons wheels in the front and 17 x 8 inch wide wheels in the rear. They are brought closer to the car via K-mac springs lowering the body 2,5 inches in the front and 3 inches in the rear.
The stereo installation is kept more on the simple side with a Pioneer headunit and Rockford Fosgate 4inch speakers in the front and Rockford Fosgate 6 x9 inch speakers in the rear. These are then powered by a Rockford 2 channel amplifier. Again, Custom Trim Works was entrusted to wire all of these up and incorporate them naturally into the custom interior.
Chris would like to thank Custom Trim Works, Race Solutions, 2SUS Custom resprays and Persham Automotive for all of their help along the way to making this such a stand out work of mobile art. Chris’ friends Greazy, Dom, SXTOOL, OZX23Q, SXE05X, ILBUZU, OBUZME, BUZDBY, OOOFFT, BUZMUP polishing, LZY13B, TYM2GO Racing, RENEW, HITMAN, Spin City and all of the boys also deserve an honourable mention for all their helpful ideas and inputs along the way.
